South of the main Champagne producing area lies the area of Cotes des Bars – still officially Champagne (producing up to 25% of the while Champagne harvest) and more attractive and less busy – around the Aube and Seine Rivers east of Troyes. The vineyards of the Côte des Bar are planted almost exclusively with Pinot Noir grapes and tend to be somewehat lighter and fresher than those from further north.
The Moulin de Landion at Dolancourt is a stylish Hotel and Restaurant which proved to be an ideal base for exploring the vineyards and Champagne houses of this less-known region. The old water mill (moulin = watermill) remains a central feature with 16 en-suite bedrooms and an elegant restaurant and wine list. An excellent selection of Champagnes to taste in the bar or on the riverside terrace. Local food is an important feature of the restaurant. Part of Relais de Silence group the surroundings are peaceful.
